Volunteer Opportunities

Are you passionate about science, nature, and the future of our planet? Do you believe in the power of education to spark curiosity, foster stewardship, and create lasting change in our communities? If so, we invite you to become part of something meaningful and inspiring by volunteering with the Umpqua Natural Science Leadership Hub (UNLSH)!

Please use the Contact Us form to introduce yourself and let us know which volunteer roles interest you. A member of our team will be in touch to chat about the next steps and how you can get involved.

Wetland and Riparian Surveying

UNLSH offers a variety of exciting opportunities for college students to actively participate in field-based learning and research, with a focus on wetlands restoration, habitat monitoring, and community-based conservation efforts.  These projects are an excellent way to build important skills, explore career paths in natural sciences, and make a positive impact on local ecosystems.

Our fieldwork opportunities are designed to be dynamic, educational, and collaborative. Students work alongside experienced environmental educators, scientists, and restoration specialists to help restore native habitats, monitor local wildlife, collect meaningful data, and engage with the community. Through this hands-on involvement,  students gain not only technical skills in biology, ecology, and environmental science but also valuable experience in teamwork,  leadership, and professional field practices.

Opportunities may vary throughout the year and may include:

  • Volunteer positions, ideal for gaining initial experience or fulfilling academic service-learning requirements.

  • Stipend-based seasonal work, providing compensation for your time and contributions to furthering the research and restoration of wetlands and ponds.

Whether you’re pursuing a degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, education, or a related field, participating in our field programs offers an invaluable complement to your academic studies. Plus, it’s a great way to network with other passionate students and professionals who share your commitment to conservation and sustainability.

If you're interested in learning more about current or upcoming fieldwork opportunities, we encourage you to reach out. Let us know about your interests, availability, and goals—we’re always excited to connect with motivated students eager to make a difference.

Education Science Camps

Each summer, our camp brings together curious and  energetic youth from across the region for a week of hands-on learning,  outdoor exploration, and unforgettable memories. Set in the beautiful  natural landscapes of our area, the camp is designed to ignite a  lifelong love for science and the environment by giving kids the chance  to get outside, ask big questions, and engage with the natural world in meaningful ways.

As a volunteer, you’ll be joining a team that’s dedicated to creating a fun, inclusive, and enriching experience for every camper. You might help lead experiments, guide nature walks,  assist with arts and crafts, lend a hand during group games, or just be there to encourage and cheer on campers as they explore and learn.  There’s a place for everyone—whether you’re a science enthusiast, an aspiring educator, a parent, a college student looking for experience,  or simply someone who enjoys working with kids and giving back to the community.

Volunteering at our Summer Science Camp is more than just helping out—it’s an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people. You’ll be helping to cultivate environmental awareness, spark curiosity, and build confidence in the scientists, leaders, and changemakers of tomorrow. And along the way,  you’ll build lasting friendships, learn new skills, and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors yourself.

Join Our Board of Directors

We’re looking for enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join our Board of Directors. As a board member, you’ll play a key role in shaping the vision and direction of our organization, helping us to empower educators and support the next generation of environmental leaders.

UNLSH is committed to providing educators with the training, resources, and mentorship they need to create impactful natural science curricula. By supporting their work, we aim to foster a deeper understanding of science and an enduring commitment to the environment among youth throughout our region.

As a member of the Board of Directors, your voice and leadership will help guide us in our mission to:

  • Offer high-quality, hands-on learning opportunities for educators

  • Promote environmental literacy and natural science education

  • Support youth in becoming future stewards of the Earth

  • Build strong community connections through science outreach

We welcome individuals from all walks of life who share our passion for science education and community engagement. Whether you bring experience in education, science, nonprofit leadership, or simply a deep love for the natural world, your unique perspective and commitment can make a real difference.

If you’re excited about the possibility of volunteering, getting involved, and growing with an organization that’s making a tangible impact, we’d love to hear from you.

Join us on this incredible journey to inspire, educate, and lead—together, we can make a lasting difference for our educators, our youth, and our planet.
